Given the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty that lies ahead of us, the upcoming provincial election is one of great importance to our members and the wider community.

Join the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers BC (FACL BC) for this live event featuring representatives from each of the major parties participating in the BC Election. Representatives will speak to us about their plans to promote justice, equity, and opportunity in British Columbia. Participants will have an opportunity to get to know the party platforms and also, to ask questions to each of the representatives about issues that are important to them.

Our panelists:

Rachna Singh - NDP MLA Surrey-Green Timbers:

Rachna was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2017 provincial election. She is the chair of the Special Committee to Review the Police Complaint process. Rachna moved to Canada in 2001 from India and chose Surrey to build a better life for her young family.

Prior to her election to the legislature, she worked as a Psychologist and drug and alcohol counsellor, a support worker for women facing domestic violence, and a community activist. Rachna is an outspoken advocate for the rights of marginalized communities, in particular women of color.

Rachna has two children and is married to radio journalist Gurpreet Singh.

Michael Lee - Liberal MLA Vancouver-Langara:

Michael was elected the MLA for Vancouver-Langara in 2017. He is the Official Opposition Co-Critic for Indigenous Relations and is a member of the Select Standing Committee on Parliamentary Reform, Ethical Conduct, Standing Orders and Private Bills and a Member of the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act.

Prior to his election, Michael was a business lawyer and partner with Lawson Lundell LLP. Before obtaining his law degree at the University of Victoria, he worked as a Special Assistant to the Right Honourable Kim Campbell in Vancouver and Ottawa. He also holds a BSc in Biology, a BA (Hons) in Political Science and an MA degree in Political Science with a focus on environmental regulations.

Michael has served as the past Chair of the Board of Directors of Arts Umbrella and Alumni UBC. He has also served as a past Vice-Chair and Board member of Science World British Columbia, SUCCESS and Leadership Vancouver. Michael is a past Board member of the YMCA of Greater Vancouver Foundation, the Justice Education Society of BC, Sustainable Cities International and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

A son of Hong Kong immigrants, Michael was born and raised in Vancouver. He and his wife Christina have three young adult children.

Nazanin Moghadami - Green Party Candidate Vancouver-Kensington:

Nazanin moved to Canada 15 years ago as a student. She is currently working as an independent clinical counsellor with a bachelor degree from University of British Columbia and a master’s degree from Adler university. Since moving to Canada, she has extensively worked with newcomers, refugees and immigrants, LGBT community, survivors of gender-based violence, and those struggling with addiction and poverty.

Her lived and field experience, as well as her training and formal education have equipped her with an in-depth understanding of how interconnected the personal struggles and issues are with the social and systemic structures. Nazanin’s involvement with the labour movement, her advocacy and her activism have also equipped her with the appreciation of what some solutions to those problems might be.

For example, in supporting someone who has been sexually assaulted, it is vital for the person to have access to a strong personal support, including trauma-informed mental health care. It is also important to have informed, evidence-based laws and policies in place that inform the reporting, intervention and prosecution process.

This is why Nazanin’s main focus in this election is to create an alternative response option for those who have experienced not only gender-based violence, but mental health crises, substance use and addiction; a response option led by trained mental health professionals who can intervene without the law enforcement being the first line of contact.
