Are you an internationally trained lawyer or law student? FACL is hosting its second annual event for internationally trained law students and lawyers! We are hosting a Q&A with lawyers who have completed either their NCA or LLM to discuss their experience with transitioning into the practice of law in BC. 

Join us via Zoom on Thursday, May 25, 2023 for an interactive session with experienced lawyers. This is open to all FACL and non-FACL members to join.

    Meet the Speakers: 

    Abby Pang is the founder and principal lawyer of Illuma Family Law. Abby grew up in Richmond, BC, attended UBC and law school in Hong Kong. She completed her NCA qualifications upon her return from law school. Abby has been practicing law since 2012 and helps clients with personal injury claims, divorce and separation proceedings, cohabitation agreements and marriage agreements. Abby currently serves on the FACL BC membership committee and mentorship committee.

    Akash Ray (he/him/his) is a Privacy Analyst at the District of West Vancouver. In this role, he assists the municipal government by developing and managing the corporate privacy program and advising various departments on compliance mechanisms associated with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Akash has a BA. LL.B. (Honours) degree from India and immigrated to Canada in 2021. He completed the LL.M. (Common Law) program in the following year from the Peter A. Allard School of Law, UBC, where he also served passionately as the President of the Graduate Law Students’ Society by advocating for the interests of his peers.

    Elysia Gunn is a second year associate at Hawthorne, Piggott & Company. Elysia practices primarily in a wills and estates and corporate/commercial. She obtained her LLB from the University of Sussex, England, and returned to Vancouver to complete her LLM in Common Law at UBC. While in law school in the UK, Elysia was a legal researcher for StreetLaw Brighton and served as the secretary for the Canadian Students Law Society. She also volunteered as a clinician at the UBC Pro Bono Students Canada’s Homeless Identification Clinic. Outside of law, Elysia enjoys cycling around Stanley Park or to the nearest coffee shop for a treat.

    Tiffany Ho is an associate at Barbeau Evans LLP. Her areas of practice include commercial real estate, real estate development, non-profit housing development, commercial leasing, conveyancing, mortgage lending, wills and estate planning and business law. She is also a fellow of the FACL BC Leadership Academy and a board member of Charlford Housing Society for Women.

    Natalie Chan is an associate at Allen/McMillan Litigation Counsel. Natalie grew up in Hong Kong and ultimately attended law school right after graduating high school in Hong Kong. Natalie speaks English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

    Jenn Lau is the Assistant Director of Professional Resources at Cassels, where she recruits, trains, and manages the firm’s Vancouver and Calgary summer and articling students. Prior to joining Cassels, Jenn spent over a decade at the Peter A. Allard School of Law Career Services Office, where she served as a career coach to thousands of law students and new lawyers. She is a founding board member and a former president of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers BC (FACL BC).
